Hi all,

Hoping to get a MBP for my 18th and I will use it mainly in school (and later on at uni) for note taking. However I do chemistry and maths so obviously its hard to do them with a keyboard and mouse.

What i want to be able to do, is to type notes with a keyboard and then use a graphics tablet to draw diagrams/equations etc.

I assume a graphics tablet is what I need?

I have a few questions about them:

How hard are they to use? Obviously its similar to paper and pen but clearly you're not writing on paper and it doesn't appear where you're writing. Does it get confusing trying to write without being able to see it where you are writing but on a screen?

Can they interface well with Word processing apps? Would primarily be using Word and would ideally want to be able to type a sentence then draw a diagram/equation underneath and then continue with another sentence?

Roughly how much do decent ones cost?

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

P.S on a side note would it be worth waiting a couple of months for upgraded MBPs? Or are they likely not to get upgraded for a while?

Just use paper, a macbook pro is much worse for the job of taking notes.

If you really want electronic notes, then use a livescribe smart pen.

Im waiting on the possible rMBP 13" before i buy mine for uni, but im not sure if it will be released on time, does anyone have any possible dates?

Also slightly more thread related, is there no such app available for the magic trackpad where you could possibly use it to draw stuff by tracking your finger?

why is it so much worse? I would want electronic notes because of many reasons.

1. My hand writing is shocking

2. I can type a lot faster than I can write

3. I want someone where easier to store notes, rather than in hundreds of massive folders.

The livescribe pen looks way too chunky to write with easily... and I don't want it to recognise my writing I just want it store as typed text or as drawn/written diagrams

Wacom Inkling is what you want.

thats more in the right direction yes, still I was looking for something more instant? that works along side typed text.

an example would be like an interactive whiteboard... but instead of writing on the screen youre writing on a graphics pad...

1 possibility is an iPad with keyboard attachment.

You can type and then quickly switch to an app which allows you to draw (penultimate, or something) and then switch back. That is the easiest method I think, but it won't have the power of a MBP so in all fairness... You need to get an iPad and a MBP :p that way when you get home your document will be on your MBP via iCloud ready for some "proper" work
