Would this generally be a good purchase for making music? I have this fantasy of mixing things in 5.1.

What else would I need?

As you can tell I've researched this to the max. (Actually I haven't, I'm just thinking I may as well get one and it would surely do the job?)

Have no experience of Macs, I know they're supposed to be really good at just 'doing the job', but I do have an i-phone, and find it's limitations to be only slightly annoying, albeit still annoying (e.g. you can't download 'files' and do what you will with them). The novelty of a magnetic power cable isn't cutting it much to be frank either.

Also, I'm not really sure whether only software runs. Would I be restricted to using Logic as opposd to Pro Tools or Cubase? Cheers.

I've used my MacBook Pro for 2 years doing composition, live performance and VJing; best purchase I ever made. It's a fantastic machine.

For composition, I use Ableton Live and Logic Studio, but you can also get Mac versions of Pro Tools / Cubase and others (like Ardour, which is free!)

For live performance and VJing, I use Ableton Live and VDMX for visuals, which despite the fact this is a 2 year old machine, still runs fine with both running at the same time.

A Mac really is the best option for music.
