MacBook Pro - Apple Care

I'd assume this was software related so I put it here.

Is it really worth the ridiculous £280 price tag?

I'm only considering it for the hardware fixes and whatnot so if anything does fail it wont cost me massive amounts to fix.

I'm not a careless person who drops/breaks things a lot but considering the £1900 price of my mac I'd like to make sure it's covered. I'm still well within the first year of the 1 year cover it comes with as I only bought it in December.

Does anyone have the care package and is it worth it?

Sorry this wont help you, but i was looking at getting this as my mac warranty runs out in feb. But am i right in thinking it only covers you for 2 years not 3??

It covers you for an additional 2 years after your first year warranty runs out. So three years in total.

But you get a year as standard so really your only paying for 2 years lol.

Most people buy it with HE discount. It's difficult to say wether it's worth it without the discount. I had my screen and battery replaced after two years, which would have cost £400. Apple Care doesn't cover accidental damage by the way.

eBay. You can get Applecare for significantly cheaper. Lookout for ToshComputers as a seller, they post in these forums and seem to be very trustworthy.

I also got it from eBay for about £75 - very glad I did so as I had to have the LCD and Airport Card replaced recently which would otherwise have cost me in the order of £400!

My first thought would be that if anything was iffy, it would fail within the first year, but maybe not.

My old MacBook Pro's GPU on the last day of the 3 year warranty gave up, a nice £800 bill later + all the other things I've managed Apple to fix over the years adds up to more than the original price of the MBP itself.

Well worth the money personally, but don't spend £280 on it. eBay it!

From some reports I have read tho some of the eBay ones have been rejected by Apple. Not sure if this is just because they are "off the truck" kind or what.

I must say direct from apple seems pricy, but I would rather not risk spending 100 odd quid on ebay only to find out it is not actually covering me. Tricky situation.

I deffo think it is worth it on a macbook pro. Just incase it does break, I used to go with the mentality of I can fix most things it is no problem until my brother accidently dropped my last Dell laptop down the stairs..... I learned the hard way that a laptop falling down the stairs there is no coming back from that

Now with my nice shiny macbook, it runs out this Sept. So unless I upgrade in the mean time I will be extending my applecare.

If you drop something down the stairs applecare won't help you, home insurance will. I wouldn't bother with applecare at full price. With HE discount it is well worth it. Sometimes I like it when my things break so I can buy a new one

Thanks for the replies, the repair bill seems to be astronomical (like everything apple I suppose) however I don't know anyone at university to be able to get the HE discount.

Sorry, how does this work then? Surely Apple tie the purchased warranty to the serial number? Or are we talking about authorised repairers instead of apple themselves doing it? Appreciate a steer on this....

Regarding repair costs as astronomical on some other replies to this thread, not so IMO A repair to any laptop logic board and LCD and you are looking at similar numbers.

You get a little Apple Care box with a code inside that you extend it on their site here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

So I think anyway, not many more ways to do it if it isn't correct.
