So my MBP battery is knackered! It has been for quite some time but Ive never bothered to do anything about it until today.

MBP is 2 years old, so 1 year out of warranty and the battery holds 700/5600 charge and lasts about 5minutes without being plugged in.

I tried to recalibrate the battery but it just turns off automatically before entering sleep so I cant !
Went into the Apple shop today and wa told £70 for a new battery
Are there any batteries on auction sites or other websites that are just as good or should I jsut fork out the £70 and cry about it?

Thanks :D

Go to Apple Menu > About this mac > More info > Power then check the cycle count if its 350> then your battery is worn out, its its a lot <350 its could be a duffer but its Out of warrenty so it doesn't really matter.

Ah thanks, Ill probably get one from Apple for £6 more just so if anything goes wrong I can walk into the store for a replacement and not have to pay £6.40 special delivery for a replacement and wait for it.

Cycle count is 86 and it is out of warranty and they checked in store to see if it was one of the duff ones and said it wasn't, its just crap because ive been using it for 2 years. I just thought that for under 100 cycles over a 2 year period the battery would still be better than 10minutes

If you book an appointment you can get one from the genius bar for a bit less normally but it only has a 90 day warrenty where as normally it would have a 1 year warrenty

I went in today and they said £70 instead of £90 if I gave them my old battery as it would be classed as a service replacement, that was at the genius bar. They said it would have a 1 year warranty aswell Im sure, well I hope because thats what I was going to do!

It's fine, just means you're actually using it :)

Mine's at 3 after 6 months... Shows you how often I use it away from my desk :D

If your battery is less than 300 cycles and does not hold charge properly, Apple will replace the battery. There is an additional warranty on the battery itself, which has been increased by an extra 2 years (3 years total from purchase date).

http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

Print that off, take it in and ask for a new battery free of charge.
I've done this with a macbook that was out of warranty and the battery was 18 months old.

Erm thanks a lot! Im going in tomorrow to get my new one and I was told yesterday:

Laptop and battery were manufactured in 2006, bought with 1 year standard warranty and are therefore out of warranty.
i questioned about the under 300 cycles yet crap capacity and they said it was only very few batteries and not mine, they checked on the system to see if mine was a duff one and it isnt.
So they said ive done very well to get 2 years out of my battery and only thing I can do is pay for a new one, £90 or give them my one and get a new one for £70 which will be classed as a service replacement.

I was going to do the latter and pay £70 as I kept saying about it not having more than 700/5600 charge capacity after 85cylces but they said it is out of warranty and I jsut have to pay. Are you sure that I will get given a free battery with mine like this?

edit:
Also, I mentioned about the duff batteries as said above, but they said they had received all of them back and they were all accounted for so mine cant be a duff one and its just because ive used it for 2 years that it is knackered.

What they told you is a load of rubbish, exactly how did they account for all the batteries in the UK let alone world wide? There are macbooks sitting on shelves/dusty offices that still have this problem, i've seen a number of places sending 2006 models, which by Apple's own T&Cs would be covered.

As you rightly guessed the original batteries were a known problem hence Apple issued the above warranty, it's on their own website. Batteries made between Feb 2006 (macbook/pro launch date) until about April 2007 are covered under the global warranty. The batteries were extended by 2 years from the original purchase date, even if the MBP is out of warrant the battery is covered by a separate warranty. You'll have to be quick though as the warranty for your MBP will run out this year, it may be borderline already. Hopefully you picked this up after Oct 2006, if not then some creative thinking will be in order and not too much help to the staff there.

Make sure you print that off and note down the web address if you need to show the people in the store. Without disparaging anyone i find the mac stores in the UK, especially outside of London, to have low levels of service. It's just not the same, the Apple customer is suppose to be right (most of the time) and in the UK they just don't appreciate that. US or Japan and they really do what they can

If you get problems i would ask to talk to Apple head office or perhaps call a local Apple authorised dealer with the problem. I've done this for before and had absolutely no problems at all, just looked at the battery monitor and replaced with a new one.
