Was in the Apple Store a few weeks back and noticed a hardshell MacBook Pro slightly see thru red case with roughly a price tag of 30/40. I know there are ones for much less on the Internet would anyone be able to shed some light on the fit and quality of cheaper ones also roughly how much should I be looking at paying.

i've got this one for my 13" macbook pro (in black)

it fits perfectly and is protecting it as i'd want it too. when you spend a lot on your mac you need a decent case to protect it rather than plump for a cheaper option

I have the same one, great sleeve. I would not recommend a hard case at all; they can cause more damage than they would otherwise protect against.

Well this is good to keep in mind, as I was about to buy a hard case...

What kind of damage do they cause?

The problem I have...is a clumsy as misses. Shell happily come in a chuck her keys on the desk, with my macbook pro there, and not think twice about it. My thinking was if I had a hard case, I could leave it on the desk without too much too worry about, as right now, I have to put it away when I'm done with it just in case haha!

I have this one, had it for almost 3 years and still get surprised about how nice the inside feels :p

It offers little protection against dents though, or scratches when the MBP is in use.

Actually, the only dent i have comes out of the case, as if ive managed to dent the INSIDE of the case :s

I got a pleather envelope for my MacBook a while back from Cool Bananas; cost me about twenty-five squid.

The issue with hard cases is that dirt can make its way in between the case and the laptop, which of course can cause scratches. At least a sleeve will not do this. The paintwork of the MBP is pretty tough, and should stand normal usage fine (mine is mark-free).

That said, keys will cause even more damage...your call in this case really!

What paint?

There has been much confusion about whether or not the MBP is powder coated or anodised. The process doesn't seem to involve paint, yet at the same time, it seems the MBP can chip and mark more easily than the iMac, the Apple Keyboard, etc. The finish is not the same as my iMac/keyboard either.

Yet at the same time, pitting is entirely possible.

I'll be honest, I'm not even sure anymore! :(

Powder coating or anodisation though, it's pretty tough.

Seen before. The thing that is confusing is that the MacBook Air was introduced with as an anodised aluminium enclosure, but now this statement has vanished.

I'll be honest, I'm starting to think it's more anodised than powder coated.

Could it just be plain aluminium?

Nope, aluminium by itself is too soft on its surface for daily use. It would scratch and mark like nobody's business, and let alone that, reacts with oxygen to form aluminium oxide (which would be a very thin layer).

I've had the speck case on my MBP for the past 3 years, MBP is perfect mint as new condition, case has scuffs but that's the point.

^ Yep, I have the Speck Smartshell Satin linked 2 posts up and it's great. Also sets apart from everyone else sitting there with a silver laptop.

I've got a feather on my 15".

It's really nice, fractionally thinner than the Speck cases. Fit is good but was a complete pig to get on - it didn't quite want to reach all the edges, it's a really tight fit whereas the Specks just snap on. It did go on eventually though.

I like the Incipio but I got it cheap, at the same price the Specks are better in my opinion.
