Earlier this year I purchased an MacBook Pro. Just the other day the HDD failed so I thought that this would be a good time to upgrade it with a bigger one.

Here lies the problem. I lost my original installation disk. So I went on Ebay and bought an OS X Leopard disk. But for some reason this disk wont install on my MBP (even though the listing said it should do, it was the disk with the lepard on the front not a grey disk). I've done a bit of googling and It seems that each disk is specific to each model or something? Is there anywhere where I can buy another Leopard disk that will install on my MBP? Or even better, some where that will sell the original disk? as at the moment my MBP has no OS installed and when I load it up I'm just greeted with an apple logo.

(my MBP is the 2011 model if that makes any difference)

Thanks

Firstly, if your MBP is indeed the latest 2011 model, then the HDD would be covered under Apple's warranty.

Secondly, that MBP comes pre-installed with Snow Leopard, so I really doubt that Leopard, which is an older version of OS X, will be compatible with it.

Besides, if it really is that new, why not get in touch with Apple and see if they'll replace your lost install disks with a new set?

You should have checked before wasting your money on a Leopard DVD since the seller obviously doesn't know what she/he is talking about...

If your MBP really is an early 2011 model, it will only be compatible with Mac OS X v10.6.6 (or newer). Therefore your only options are to get a new restore disc directly from Apple as Skyboat suggested, or download Lion from the Mac App Store and create a bootable USB flash drive (if you have access to another Mac that is).

The Snow Leopard retail DVDs sold on eBay will either be 10.6 or 10.6.3, so these won't be compatible with your MBP.

Good point.

Find another Mac, Put the drive in a USB caddy and install SL.

Then run the OSX update.

Take out the drive and put it into your laptop.

Thanks for the info guys :). I'll try download Lion onto a usb first. If that fails, I'll have to cough up more money for a restore disk. Cheers :)
