Macbook Pro External Hard Drives

When copying data the fans spin up to cool the drives and you will know it's in the room but when it's not being accessed it's very quiet, I've accidentally left it on in the past and noticed until I've gone to switch it on in the morning.

Why do you turn it off? I thought the idea of a NAS was that it was on all the time?

I'm away a lot for various reasons and I usually forget to switch it off so I've now set it to shutdown at midnight automatically. Call it my bit for the environment, this way I don't feel bad when I'm not recycling or something :p

Haha that's cool :)

Well thanks so much for answering all my questions :)

Now I just have to weigh up my options and make a decision on where I'm going to stick my hard drives :p

Marky I'm also thinking of getting this NAS and will give you my reasons why I want this one.

I have a Macbook Pro for music production and DJing and also a Windows PC for gaming and media.

Currently I run a Plex server on my Windows PC for streaming some TV shows to my Macbook while I am in bed. This is not really the best.

I plan to get the NAS and use it as a media streamer (xbox 360 and macbook pro). It also acts as a iTunes server which means I will also be keeping my main music collection on it.

It will also be taking backups of my Windows PC (I assume I can setup backup in Win 7 to store the image on the NAS?). I will also create a Mac OS Extended Partition on the NAS so that I can run a time machine backup for my Macbook. I cannot afford to lose my production work.

Also I will be using it to download torrents as I love to seed so as it will be a always on device for me this is a great way to boost ratio.

So I'm pretty much using it to it's full potential. I just need to save up for the box and also the x4 2TB drives I want to put in it using RAID 5 :D

Yeah after a bit of thought - I've decided to go for the Synology DS211J :)

Should be getting it tomorrow :)

I have 2 x 1TB drives that I plan on using (I've checked they are compatible) - but I also have a 320GB drive which I stored the Windows OS and a few other documents on...

I will be using the 2 x 1TB drives in a RAID 1 (This is the type which means it looks like one 2TB drive right?) - However, I want a few files off the 320GB drive - How can I go about this? Can I just shove in the 320GB and one of the 1TB drives and drag and drop the files over?

Easiest way to copy files from the 320GB drive to the NAS is to pop the 320GB HDD into an enclosure and connect it up that way.

Is there such a thing as a SATA to USB cable? And then I'll just plug it into the Mac through USB - It's not too much I need to move so speed isn't an issue...

Alright got it up and running - It's been a bit difficult - but it seems to be working okay now...

I want to get SABnzbd working on it but it's not running...

I got that up in the package manager but when I click the IP address I've scribbled out it doesn't return anything - Just a "Took too long to respond" 404 style page :(

Any ideas?

It can't find a template to use hence the 404. Copy one from the zip to the into the directory where you installed it.
