i've just run SMART utility to check my hard-drive and it has reported back this:

is there a tool i can use to repair this or run a further diagnostic test?

any help would be appreciated

i will surely go for a back up ASAP then get a new HDD/ SSD... i think the likelihood of failing is pretty high

Yeah I backed up earlier. Am looking at a Seagate Momentus XT

Has anyone got experience with this and is it any good for a mac

I'll be able to tell you later on this evening as the postman just dropped me off a shiny new 750GB Momentus XT for my MBP. :D

I bought it based on seeing reviews where it was performing nicely in MacBooks so not expecting any problems. As its got higher data density, higher spin speed and an SSD cache it 'should' perform loads better than the stock 5200 drive.

I just downloaded the SMART program too as my computer needs to be reformatted every month or so because of random errors. Mine too is failing :(. I'll also be eager to see what you have to say drubs. Is the HDD silent?

How much did you pay for the 750?

I've found the 500gb for £90

Paid £154 for the 750GB. Think the big price difference is its SATA 3 and has 8 GB NAND. Think the 500GB was SATA 2 with 4GB (could be wrong).

Would say either of them will be far better than the stock MBP drive though.

Fitted mine tonight in my 2010 Macbook Pro (which is only SATA 2 anyway!), went in ok and i'm currently trying to clone both the OSX and Bootcamp partitions at the same time using Paragon Drive Copy. Dont know whether this was successful yet as it says another 2 hours to go but if both OS's boot i'll be very happy.

I just whipped the stock drive out, fitted it into a caddy, fitted the Momentus in the machine and then booted from the Paragon WinPE cd and went for a full disk clone from the external drive. I'll report back if its been clever enough to keep the Windows partition in one piece.

The above didn't work. OSX is fine but Windows is borked, all files are there but wont boot as it doesn't like the partition table. Thats kind of what I expected would happen.

Can confirm the Momentus XT seems great though. Fast and quiet.

my new drive arrives tomorrow but i have just checked the WD website and my installed WD5000BEKT-00KA9T0 Western Digital Scorpio Black is still in warranty and i can RMA it because of the bad sectors.

i'm now thinking shall i keep the new Momentus XT or do i RMA my WD and send the Momentus back? or, RMA my WD Black, sell it, and keep my moments?!

well i've had the XT installed for 4 days now and the performance is certainly a lot more to what i had installed previous. but my old hard drive was failing so it could be an unfair comparison.

what i have noticed though is the increase in vibration (only slight) on the right hand side of my macbook pro. so like now, as i type, my wrist is vibrating away. So i'm torn between a DSR return and install the RMA'd Scorio Black or just get used to it and carry on with the XT.

has anyone got any idea of comparative perforce between the two or some advise

cheers

edit: Or i was thinking of swapping out my SSD from my gaming machine into my Mac (128gb) and installing the moments XT into this!

decisions decisions
