MacBook Pro failure???

Hi guys longish story cut short!
Last night just surfing the net on my MacBook pro. Website/page seem to freeze open another same. Tried another and Safari froze. Tried opening mail whilst this was going on and that failed to open. Next step force quit but pressing the apple logo in top left did nothing, by this point had the spinning beach ball. Now after various attempts I managed to force a shut down by pressing some keys. On restart I get a flashing folder. Now I've tried resetting p ram and a couple of other things with no joy. On live chat with Apple tech guy tried a few other things. Now when I try and start up to select my hard drive I get nothing. Only thing I can do is an Internet recovery. This bring up disk utility now it's hit or miss whether I see my hard drive show up in the left hand pane Apple guy said either hard drive cable or the drive itself

Now later on I managed to start a format/partition which started off as 5 mins. After about 20 minutes of waiting and watching it was up to 40 mins. Does this sound more like the hard drive failed? I'm thinking more along the lines of this but just want a second, third or even fourth opinion

The flex cables on that model are a lot better than the previous so my guess is it's more likely to be the hard drive.

I would recommend upgrading to a SSD anyway, so grab one! Usual candidate is a Samsung EVO of whatever size you need ;)
 
Thank you so much for the advice, tried another hard drive and its working again. Just not too sure if i would benefit from an SSD?
Basically use the mac for internet and office work at the moment.
