Well I finally took the plunge and got a Macbook Pro i5 13 inch with my HE discount and took advantage of the £65 of free Appstore/iTunes credit :)

So, as someone coming from a predominantly Windows environment, are there any totally 'must have' applications to get? I have already got Office/Lightroom/Photoshop via work and they are brilliant for what I need. But, I have £65 burning a hole in my Appstore pocket!

Are there any tips you can give a Windows user coming to OSX? It seems pretty intuitive so far- managed to get it to see my NAS and connect to my Windows Workgroup (but for some reason, the shares and NAS disappeared- I had to re-add them in Finder today )

Thanks for any help and suggestions in advance!

I'm a big fan of sparrow mail (9.99) and there is a trial version to play with before you shoot
Undock is useful for quickly ejecting usb/firewire devices (£1-2)

Otherwise pretty much everything else I use is free or you already have.

My App Store purchases have been:

* Reeder - Absolutely 100% recommend it if you're into RSS feeds - Best RSS reader I've used :)

* Skitch - Fantastic little app - Allows you to take screenshots of any part of the screen, modify them and upload them in a couple of clicks

* The Unarchiver - Another great app that is so insanely easy to use. Winrar and Winzip have a baby together :p

This is something OSX fails on big time and has done for years.

I might be missing the obvious but why don't you save the money for Lion?

If he just bought it, Im fairly sure he gets a free upgrade when it comes out.

Edit: Yep. If it was bought from Apple or a reseller after June 6th, free upgrade!

Do you mean you had to re-log in to your NAS once you rebooted OSX?

I find this is normal behavior.
Not sure if its the best way to do it, but if you log into your NAS, then go to Settings > Accounts > Login Items > Click the + at bottom and locate a folder on your NAS, it will auto log back into your NAS each time you reboot from now on.

Hopefully this will help :)

Which NAS do you have?

May be worth checking for a software update, Ive got a QNAP 219 and it kept vanishing from finder until i updated the software
