I am wanting to buy one of the new MBP's for xmas, most probably the base 15". The only thing I want to have upgraded is the Anti Glare screen but I'm stuck with the hard drive option.

I will be using the laptop for video editing HD Footage but was planning in getting an external HD for all the video and just having the programmes and OSX installed onto the laptop HD. Its the difference of about £100 and whether there is a big enough difference in the stock 5400rpm drive and the upgraded 7200rpm drive?.

Anyone have any thoughts - maybe in time I would replace with an SSD but at the moment they are just too expensive. The stock 500GB capacity will be fine for me so the actual size of the drive isn't important just the speed. I've looked into it and some say its a big difference and some say its not apparent.

Thanks

Get it with the stock hard drive and upgrade it yourself later if you feel that you need to.

Swapping a drive with OS X is very simple, connect the new drive via USB, use SuperDuper! to clone it and then swap the physical drive out. Easy.
