Macbook Pro memory upgrade, 8500 or 10600

Given the memory upgrade doesn't cost a lot, I'm going to upgrade my 2010 2.53 i5 Macbook Pro from 4 to 8 gig.

A certain large memory suppliers advisor tool returns DDR3 PC3-8500 as its compatible kit but the current factory installed memory (if I run the same suppliers system scanner) is DDR3 PC3-10600.

Which one has anyone used when upgrading and is there any realistic difference between the two? Just wondering why it doesn't return the 10600 kit when my model is selected from the advisory tool?

Ta.

1333 usually has higher CAS latency than 1066 (usually 9ns vs 7ns), so if you put 1333 in your machine it will actually run slower as it will be run at 1066 speeds with higher latency.

2010 models supported 1066. 2011 supported 1333. You can put 1333 in your MBP. But it will run at 1066.

But the factory installed memory is 1333 so guess my (late) 2010 should support it.

Given the latency difference, which would actually be quicker?

It will definitely be supported, but will be run at 1066mhz.
1066mhz sodimms will almost always have a CAS latency of 7 (look for CL=7 in the specs), 1333mhz is usually CL9 unless you spend more on specialist ram, which will net you no benefit at all in your machine over buying 1066 CL7.
8Gb (2x4Gb) Crucial 1066Mhz CL7 stuff can be had amazingly cheap these days at around £30. Have a look for Crucial part number CT51264BC1067.

Hope this helps :)

Yup, it does, ta.

Mailed Crucial and they say if has 1333 installed by Apple it sounds like early 2011 rather than 2010 (I bought early 2011 but was a refurb so assumed it was a 2010 model) so if I mail them the serial # they'll check the exact spec and advise accordingly.
