Right, so just trying to get used to this OSX Lion having always only ever used windows. But I do use iPhones.

So my first query is how do u get 'Mail' app on the Mac to behave like Mail on the iPhone with gmail? I only want to download and show the last 50 messages. When I first started it up it started downloading many thousands of emails!! So for now I have just deleted the account until I know how to set it up properly.

Or should I just use a browser?

I believe this can be done in GMAIL its self rather than the mail client. Add the GMAIL account to mail as an IMAP account. Then at www.gmail.com, go to the settings. Then on the 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' tab there is an option towards the bottom to limit the number of messages that are downloaded to an IMAP folder.

Should hopefully solve the problem for you :)

Thx for replying - OK I have checked and its already set at the lowest setting of 1000. Im not sure that setting works as I'm sure Mail was trying to download considerably more then 1000. Shame it does not work the same as the iPhone mail app.
Does anyone use Sparrow or Mailplane?

It's 1000 per folder, so: 1000 from All Mail; 1000 Spam; 1000 Sent; 1000 Inbox etc.

You can limit which folders show up by unticking them.
