MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues

As someone just posted on the MR thread: Will Apple be using a different board, or refurbished NOS stuff? I noticed the program is only running for a year, which is just about how long the old boards ran before crapping out...

My 2011 is running fine, and to be honest I've stripped it down, dusted, reapplied decent TIM and removed the god awful amount they used from the factory. I'd probably have a fight on my hands if I wanted to get it repaired, but in my defence Apple it didn't look like Apple gave two flying ones about the 2011 when I did so. Dah.

Don't think you really need the tinfoil hat on this one.

It'll be exactly the same as their 2008 Macbooks with failed 8600GT cards.
They'll use refurbished boards, and they will all fail in the same way.

It's a good question randal. From my experience unless the quality of the refurbished logic boards has improved Apple will likely end up replacing a lot of machines under the three strikes rule, assuming it applies.

It's probably the most ecomically viable way of placating the class action suit mob.

Acknowledge the problem, fix the cheapest way possible and hope that by 2016 people would have upgraded their 5 year old machines. Then pick off any stragglers on a case by case basis.

I can't see any other way they would have approached it, this way they get to use up their old repair stock and save some face. Anything else would require massive amounts of retooling and reengineering to remedy a 4-5 year old problem.

Interesting that the 1st/2nd Gen retina MBP with the GT650M is included. There's plenty of rumbling about image retention issues in the hardcore Apple community, but I've not seen widespread mention of GPU issues with that generation.

From a quick Google it looks like this recall settles 2 class action suits, one for the AMD GPUs in the 2011 machines and another for ghosting on the 2012 rMBPs.

Damage/cost control then, one repair program is better than two. :)

If the new logic board remains fine for another 2-3 years I'll be happy.. it's the OpenCL development that I do usually results in the GPU getting a bit of a battering.. :D

The think that irks me most about the 2011 is that if you HAVE to use the AMD GPU if you run an external display. The onboard Intel chip is capable of running multiple displays, but for some reason Apple decided to hardwire the mDP port straight to the AMD GPU.

Soon as you plug the monitor in, the fans spin up, then get louder and louder!

Yes that annoys me too, and they really do get quite loud sometimes!

It's funny that my MBP GPU will run an external display as long as I don't run anything heavy.. but as soon as I do it will crash and then needs leaving for ages until it's cooled down.
