MacBook Pro screen darkening

I have a first gen 15" macbook pro bought in the summer of '05. Recently I've noticed the left hand side of the screen is a lot duller/darker (on max brightness) than the rest of the screen. What is this indicative of?

Yeah, one of the first gen MBP's, bought from the the apple store in regent street.

After a bit of research the first gen machines were shipped with CCFL backlights, which have now been replaced with LED backlights. It appears that my MBP may just be coming to the end of its lifespan.

So any ideas how much getting the backlight replaced would cost?
 
My MBP with LED backlighting has recently started to go very dark towards the bottom. Am going to take it in to get it repaired under warranty.
 
Hmm, I emailed a repair company based in london and they only replace the entire screen at a cost of £320 for the 15.4".

So I guess it really isn't worth it. On the upside, it seems that the side that was dark now looks a lot brighter and almost on par with the rest of the screen.
