Hi All,

I am thinking of upgrading to an SSD drive in my MacBook Pro and was interested in what the view was regarding the Samsung 830 drives versus the newer 840 and 840 Pro drives.

Is the 840 considered a big improvement?

And is the 840 considered as reliable on the MacBook Pro as the 830 was?

Don't get normal 840. 830 and 840 Pro are very similar about 5-10% speed increase for read and writes.

830's are still much cheaper so i'd go for one of them. The normal 840's use a cheaper type of memory so have crap write speeds.

Great, thanks for confirming.

And another, I noticed people talk about compatibility issues with SSD drives and Macs and the need for the right firmware/software on the SSDs.

If I buy an 830 drive, do I have to do anything to set the drive up or can I just install it and run and install and get Mac OS on it?

And final question. Someone I spoke to said it's possible to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the drive and then restore data from a Time Machine backup, or alternatively you can install the OS from the Time Machine backup. Is this true? And if so are the advantages to either approach?

Thanks

In days of old there was much faffing around required the get an SSD humming away happily.

Not so much these days :)

I'd say the 830 is a safe bet, and considering the current prices I'd not even bother looking at the 840 Pro unless money is no object and I-must-have-the-fastest-thing-possible!!1! ;)

It's easy enough to get up and running. Just make a USB for the Mountain Lion installer, swap the drives and boot from the USB. Choose to restore from Time Machine when asked to.

Or, if you get the laptop drive kit you can skip all that. Swap the drives and use the USB cable to connect the old drive and boot from it. Run Carbon Copy Cloner and clone it onto the SSD. Job done :)
