Had some headphones plugged in yesterday, unplugged them and it turned on the digital output on the sound card instead of going back to speakers.

Have tried a couple of restarts, plugged things in and out and all that, been into audio midi setup and can't find any way of changing it back to using the speakers.

Headphones still work fine when plugged in.

Yep, headphones plugged in get the obvious choice of headphones, unplug them and it defaults to digital output.

Really got me this one so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seems that this is a common problem according to Google.

I've fixed it by a big of aggressive and liberal plugging and unplugging of the headphone socket. I found that if when I was unplugging it I would get half way and according to system prefs it was using internal speakers then when the jack was fully out it would go digital and I just had to be a little slower when unplugging the jack to get it to stick on using the internal speakers. Anyway seems to have sorted itself out now.

Yeah ive had this problem happen to me once or twice. Youll notice that a little re light stays on within the headphone socket indicating the optical out is still on. I fixed mine much the same as you did, the trick is to use something thin to poke along the bottom of the socket until the light goes out.
