Macbook Pro - Underpowered.

newer MBP have soldered ram..

2011 MBP i7 with 16GB ram.. seems to work nicely for development, photography processing etc.

The current non-retina MBP does not have soldered ram.

Chrome lags for me regardless of what I put it on. My Macbook, my mac mini, my laptop or my NUC using Windows or Linux. I don't see any difference in how bad it lags unless I use the Canary nightlys on Windows and OS X. But despite the lagging being resolved, Canary nightly's become crash happy.

Ahh nice to know.. I bet by the time I replace this one it will! :/

The poor MBP is currently chugging.. as I've just got the OpenCL image alignment routines working.. with 36MB images.. some optimisations needed but it's faster than the 4 seconds the CPU needs! More GPUs needed in the next MBP obviously!

IIRC Safari is the only browser that will work 100% due to Apple not allowing other browsers to use RAM in an efficient manor.

They don't!

I think Tom_e may be confused with Safari (neé Webkit) on iOS 7 having access to the Nitro Javascript engine whereas other browsers can't call that API. That's changing with iOS8 though...
