Just noticed that Apple have updated their macbook pro range, now with core 2 duo, more memory as standard and larger hard drives. I think that covers all the main upgrades.

I'm in need of a laptop and have been waiting for the upgrade to be released but now I'm not to sure whether I'm ready to jump aboard. I really like the apple line, but I was hoping for a pro that looked a little more like the non pro and an upgrade graphics system too.

Has anyone else here been waiting? Has anyone already started waiting for the anticipated santa rosa upgrade next year?

What's the advantages over normal macbooks? (other than the obvious i.e. bigger screen.....)
Off the top of my head:

  • Bigger screens (15" and 17" as opposed to 13.3"), and therefore bigger screen resolutions
  • Generally superior styling (backlit keyboard, thinner bezel around screen, aluminium instead of plastic, thinner overall etc.)
  • More ports (ExpressCard, Firewire 800 etc.)
  • Proper graphics cards with their own RAM, instead of integrated graphics. This also allows for a greater output resolution (Capable of outputting to a 30" LCD, I believe, whilst the MacBook can only do 1920x1200, or 24")
  • DVI output (Instead of Mini-DVI, which requires an adapter sold separately for DVI and VGA) with a VGA adapter supplied as standard

And now since the updates:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo processors instead of plain old Intel Core Duo (this provides for a huge boost in performance, according to Apple)
  • Three SODIMM sockets instead of two, allowing for a maximum of 3GB RAM
  • Option for greater hard drive capacity as standard

Core 2 Duo only provide a small improvement over yonah, in encoding it's about 10% and in games less than 5%. It's not until santa rosa ones come out next year that the improvement will be large.
