They have to, every other manufacturer has cheaper and more powerful laptops out now.

I personally thought this update would have happened before the end of January. If it doesn't happen this month I would be really surprised - I assume there must be a delay in getting the CPU chips sorted out because everything else is probably ready to go.

Id hazard a guess that this sort of tech is what apple are holding out for before they release a mbp update (auto graphics card switching). Well it'd be something id find useful as i never use the 9600 in my mbp on osx as its a bit inconvenient to turn on. Just a guess though...
