Macbook Pro upgrade...

I'm thinking about upgrading my Macbook Pro a bit - wanna max out the RAM to 8GB and also maybe swap out the SATA drive for an SSD. Any suggestions? I know pretty much what specs I want, I'm just wondering if the brand is important.....

The system will take up to 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM 204-pin (1333Mhz); I've found some on eBay from the USA for around £75 delivered, which is cheaper than most of the UK stores I've looked at, but that makes me think maybe it's an inferior brand - does such a thing exist??

And then as for SSDs...... I hate the idea of not having oodles of storage with me at all times, but I can't really justify £200 for a 256GB drive, so I reckon if I go for a 128GB and then just carry my old 500GB SATA2 around in an enclosure..... Again, is there any preference on what brand of SSD? Some going on eBay for around £160, but I dunno what to look for........someone said there's something called TRIM which some of the newer drives can do that reduces wasted space by telling your OS which sectors have been deleted that can be written to?? Or would I be better spending more on a decent make??

Apologies if I've stepped on any toes talking about buying from non-OcUK places here, I just really wanna know if it's worth buying a certain brand/model or just going for the cheapest I can find??

re the RAM, check the voltages are compatible, also there are approved vendors, with PCs if its not listed on the approved vendor list there can be issues getting it to run properly, not sure about Macs tbh
Re the SSD, yeah its worth getting one with TRIM, and there is quite a variance in performance, cos its quite a lot of money rather than just tell you what to buy I think youd be best doing a little bit of research so you get some peace of mind, go check out a coupla review sites like Anandtech, as youll see theres different types of SSD, SLC (expensive) and MLC (cheaper) as well as several different memory controllers in addition to features such as TRIM. As always you tend to get what you pay for so as I say Id definitely recomend some further reading

There's a whole mac forum bit half way down to get the best help ;)

The ram does sound a little too good to be true, but iv never looked into upgrading my mbp's ram from 4gig (seems to do the trick)

As for SSD's, TRIM isnt supported by osx yet... But thats not stopped me with my c300 :) (and apparently an update will support it at some point). If your doing a larger external drive option id recommend getting a firewire setup as you'll find usb2 isnt very good at transferring lots of data (made my back ups a dull and lengthy process). For the SSD option you also might want to hold out a few more months as I believe there are new ones being released.

Yeah I found the Mac section just after i posted here! :)

I'm on 2GB at the mo and could do with more (do lots of audio, video editing...), so figured why not go all out?! Might give the cheap stuff a try and see what happens. Fool me once, etc.....

SSD-wise, maybe I will wait a while..... I imagine prices are likely to drop over time, and I'd really appreciate the extra space if I could afford a bigger one! I hear it does speed things up impressively though - is this the case??

I currently use an external HDD enclosure which has both USB and FireWire (400) ports, but I'm using USB as I don't have a 400 to 800 FW cable (my MBP has 800 as you probably know...). Would you recommend getting an enclosure that supports FW 800?
