Well hopefully I'll get a job within the next millenia and I'll want a new laptop.

Main purpose will be games/movies/work stuff

So it'll have to be portable but pack a punch.

For £1200 from Apple I can get a 2.4/8600GT etc

For £900 from Dell I can get 2.4/4gb/8600GT etc

Obviously the apple looks amazing, but is it worth the premium?

i have a MBP and i love it, i would say it worth the extra £300 tbh, don't forget it will hold its value a lot better than a dell ever will :)

That's very odd. On the Dell website, go to Notebooks, then on the left-hand side use the e-value code:
305-N02X5306

This one definitely has 1440x900.

The Dell for games argument doesn't hold water as you can install Windows on the Mac and dual boot giving you the same performance under windows as the Dell so games will work the same.

The only question you have to ask yourself is "Is the extra cost worth it?"

Also consider that if your buying a MacBook Pro you really should buy Applecare which is about another £100 more expensive than Dells equivalent cover, so that would make it £400 difference. But it is true that you will get far more back if and when you come to sell than you ever would a Dell.

It's up to you, only you can decide in the end. I'd never choose a dell over a macbook pro (especially a consumer dell) but nobody except you knows what matters to you. Find a macbook pro and play with it in store...

Well, I don't think that argument holds water. I have my macbook pro insured and no apple cover, so for less money I'll get it repaired if I accidentally throw it down the stairs or I'll get it replaced if it gets stolen. I can't understand why I'd want applecare instead....

Is that under home contents insurance?

I didn't mean at as an argument for or against just pointing out things to consider. :)

It is, covers it anywhere in the world (along with my phone and a few other bits).

It's obviously worth having some form of cover but even dedicated insurance on the PC is probably going to be better than applecare as it'll cover theft.

i was talking "out of the box".

tbh i wouldnt expect your average gamer to pay a premium for OSX then remove it or duel boot it with another OS which is additional money.

its early and ive had no caffine so there is a chance that doesnt make sense.
