Wife's macbook was on the kitchen table the other day and got water spilt by it, whipped it off the table and put it in an upside down v position on the carpet to dry out for a bit, but it now won't charge.

Charger gives an orange light when plugged in, but after hours it just gives the out of battery screen when you press the power button.

It's about 6 years old, any idea if it might be an economical fix or might it be a write off?

Sounds like logic board to me, which will probably include top case also.

Price from Apple will be over £600ish, probably non economical
Some third party repairs will be able to get it working cheaply however these repairs tend to be short term fixes (sometimes you get lucky, but usually not)

Have you put it in some rice?

It was probably best to leave it unplugged for a good few days before trying to turn it on again, when you powered it back on you may have shorted something.

You could try dry it out for a few more days and then try your luck, otherwise it is probably dead.

leave it to dry fully while switched off. Maybe keep it in a fairly warm spot and then try again. if it still doesnt work then its probably most done for
