How good are MacBooks at recording audio? I go to a lot of conferences and make sound recordings of the proceedings - would a MacBook be able to make decent recordings with an external microphone. They do have a microphone socket don't they?

They dont have a mic port but you can get a belkin product which is usb based creating another audio in and out, and as far as I am aware the recording quality is down the the software you use, compression used and the microphone, in which case the macbook would be fine if you know what I mean?

The technical specifications say it comes with a 'Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)'

Sounds more than adequate to me ;)

I didnt say it was i was merely pointing out that you couldnt plug in an XLR or one of those big jack's which come with the more professional microphones you would need a convertor as it only has a mini jack port.

:D

Typically you're looking at an unbalanced line in.. up to you if you want to add an external interface to plug in an XLR-based mic (if you have one)
