Macbook run windows external HDD

Hi all I have a Macbook and was wondering if there is anyway to boot windows from an external USB HDD ?

I don't think bootcamp supports this.
You can keep a virtual machine on an external drive and runs that, virtualised, inside OS X.

virtual drives don't run as reliable though, is there anyway to install windows on the external drive without using bootcamp ?

Not as reliable? You've got snapshot capability and flexibility using a VM, so I'd say it could work out more reliable...

To answer your question though, I've never got it working.

I use VM's day in day out, and have for the last three years. They have been pretty reliable for me.
I don't know a way to install on an external.

It is possible, there are guides about. I've not done it personally.
