Hi

GF got a macBook 2.2 with 1GB RAM before Christmas and it was nice and fast starting up and shutdown. She got office installed (she uses it for work) at the same time and hasn't added any more apps since then.

Now its acting like a windows machine, getting slower and slower at starting up and shutting down, she says its not been dropped unless they damage really easily. What can I do about speeding it back up like it was when new?

I see quite a few threads about the mac loving memory, would 4GB be overkill, should she get 2GB or is 1GB fine.

I'm really a windows user so it seems like the daily use of windows just creates junk that slows the OS down, is this the case with OS X?

Cheers

I would upgrade to 2GB, they do, as you say love RAM.

Run Onyx on it, to clear up caches etc and delete the file inside HDD/Library/Caches and also Home/Library/Caches.

You may also want to run the cleaning scripts in Terminal:

Code:
sudo periodic daily
Code:
sudo periodic weekly
Code:
sudo periodic monthly

Sounds like another 1gb of RAM would be the ticket for her uses. 4GB would be overkill if she's only using Office, without doubt.

excellent, thanks I'm downloading Onyx now to see if that improves it. Might get her the 2GB upgrade if its no better, its valentines soon isn't it ;)

Ran Onyx, on the cleaning tab ran a system clean, then ran the scripts on the maintenance tab.

seems nippier, might get the RAM too.

one question, on the cleaning tab, user options how destructive is it. GF will be cross if all her settings / personalization goes

got mine just before xmas and its still quite fast at shutdown and booting, but I added in 2gb so maybe that will help, or clear the caches

Mines a little slow to restart but I do that so infrequently it doesn't really bother me. At what point is it running slow - before or after login? And are you on Tiger or Leopard?

Leopard, was very slow to shut down 5-6 minutes with the screen still on just whirring away. Startup could be faster (it auto logs in) but I guessed that was down to 1GB of RAM.

That shutdown problem was a 10.5.1 problem, same thing happened for me. Startup was fine though. Make sure you have updated to 10.5.2 to sort the slow shut downs.

Hows it going now? Any faster?

yes on 10.5.2 now and its much improved, I've not got enough time for keep up to date on both PC and Mac updates, thanks everyone for the help.

slow startup shut down? the sleep behaviour is so good on macs i have never really seen the need to switch them on/off preferring the instant on. Perhaps some re-education is required. Of course if her usuage pattern is days or weeks apart with the laptop disconnected...?

Exactly. The only time I restart is for updates or when killing a process doesn't solve whatever problem I'm having.

Nothing wrong with shutting the thing down however. :)

I tried to suggest the sleep option but she doesn't like the idea of it being 'on' if its in her bag. its used every day so the charger is out at some point anyway. I felt compelled to at least find out why it was taking so long but fixing it has been a bonus
