MacBook Woes

Got my MacBook way back in June and it seems to have developed a fault where it randomly shuts down.

One minute it will be working and the next *boom* the power gets switched off. This happens wether it is running on battery or on mains.

I have done some research and it appears that there are other people experiencing this problem and there is no known fix.

I telephoned Apple this morning and they are going to send out a man with a box to collect it tomorrow. Anyone know how long these things take to be returned?

Anyone else have/had the same problem?

From many read, It is said to take about 2 weeks - it is not nice waiting really.

I'm hoping the MacBook I'm due to recieve from delivery don't develop such an issue - it is said to be an issue with the mobo? I'm not 100%, too many "could be" from post i've read in Mac Forums. Also, most people who've had random shut downs seem to have it develop quite early on using - you said you've used it since June?

Used every other day since June. I didnt expect it to break this easy, maybe Apple dont test their products before they release them?

Although, saying that, I have had my Ipod since they first came out and it is fine.

It appears that its a problem with the logic board, so techincally it should mean that Dr. Jones will be fine and yours will be fixed, although not sure how long it will take.

BeatMaster :D

Meh, one thing i've learnt is never buy first revisions!

My third revision PM G4 is sweet, although it is abit loud, but it works so its all goood :D

As for Apple testing, I think they do. But there are problems which come in mass manufacture that they simply wouldn't know about

I have to agree with you on this one even though I did by a first revision MacBook and it bit me in the behind. My brand new MacBook seemed to dislike anything that made use of it's graphics hardware, simply bringing up the front row menu cause the graphics to jump. I finally proved this fault using CineBench which would run the OpenGL HW benchmark for 3 iterations fine but anything more would cause the score to drop tenfold and you could see it was running the benchmark at about 1fps. AppleCare replaced my MacBook within 4 days, the new one arrived on the Friday morning and they collected the old on in the afternoon.

So far the replacement is working flawlessly, even with 2GB of RAM and a 120GB harddrive that I added myself, so touch wood it won't cause me any more grief.

Well they collected on Tuesday and have heard nothing else off them since. My repair status is set to "diagnosing product".

Hopefully I will get it back soon, I miss my nice white MacBook :D

Had the identical problem, but from the second boot! To be fair to Apple they are replacing the MacBook with no questions....but I am still waiting for it and I placed my original order on 1st Aug!

Anywho as identicated this looks like a common problem....

Update: Got my macbook back last Tuesday and the shutdown issue is resolved, seems like the logic board change worked.

Now the machine keeps freezing, beachballing at random intervals and then suddenly kicking back into life. I have swapped RAM and reinstalled OSX, reset the PRAM and PMU and I still have the same problem.

I rang Apple and they are completley baffled by this, I have done some research on the official mac forums and it appears like it needs a HDD replacement as some of the early Fujitsu models all show these same symptoms.

Hopefully Apple will have sent me a new disk within the next few days.

Either way I am not a happy bunny.

Anyone else experienced similar problems?

Well all the people over at this thread are seeing the issue and its all Fujitsu hard disks.

Looks like early MacBooks shipped with a donald Fujistu hard disks that fail over time.

Oh and I have a 120GB Fuji HDD not just the "stock" size.

Whew, I would have posted in this thread ages ago however apple have had my macbook FOR 1 WHOLE MONTH! I had exactly the same problem as the OP sent my lappie off to apple (which they recived on the 31st of August) and only just got it back they say they've changed the motherboard and the screen bezel? but it seems to be working fine now :) just soooooo glad to have my machine back

The screen bezel is a known fault, they don't always 'sit' right when you open them, making them move and click to the touch.

Hardly a major problem, but a flaw anyway :)

The problem with the new macbook is caused by the heatsinks. But the revised heatsink doesn't work with the original logic board so both will be changed.

I agree on *** first revision thing.

I had ana ibook that had the logic board fault where the video would scramble and it would freeze. Had to be sent back 3 times before they fixed it.

Although it only took about 3 days each time, depends which repair centre it goes to I guess.
