Macbook won't go past grey apple logo..

Some reason it won't go past the above.

I've tried resetting the PRAM etc to no avail.

It doesn't boot into safe mode, I've tried cmd & v but it doesn't get to the stage where I can enter a command in.

It gets to "HFS: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)"

I don't have the disc either..

You really need the disk (or another Mac) to diagnose any further. You need to see if it will boot from a known good HDD or even a known good OS - you can do this by booting into target disk mode on another Mac and trying to boot this Mac from the second Mac's drive (by Firewire).

Then assuming it boots you can use the operating system you've booted into to run disk utility on the drive in your Mac and see if it's mullered.

With the disks you can do similar.
