Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland," "Touching the Void") has expressed interest in filming what he describes as "a Scottish Western".
"I am definitely going to return to Scotland to direct a film version of The Eagle Of The Ninth. It is a book that I absolutely loved as a child...We are beginning to think about the cast and the idea is to use American actors for the Romans and to use Scots and other Celts for the Pictish people" he told The Scotsman.
Rosemary Sutcliff's 1954 novel is set in ancient times and follows a young Roman officer who sets out to learn the fate of the Ninth Legion, a famed battalion stationed at the border with Northern Britain which completely vanished.
It was previously adapted for television in 1977 and Director Neil Marshall ("Dog Soldiers," "The Descent") has previously expressed interest.
