Using traditional flash drives to transfer gigabytes of data has become a time consuming process. MX-FX USB 3.0 flash drives address this need by adding an extremely-high transfer rate. This ultra-compact drive is fast, bidirectional, dynamically attachable that is consistent with the requirements of the PC platforms of today and tomorrow. MX-FX USB 3.0 flash drive requires no separate power cable and is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, at USB 2.0 speeds.

Blimey these are faaaaaaast. The speeds are comparable to SSD's. Would you get similar performance if you installed Win7 onto one and then used it as a boot drive?

You could indeed boot from one of these so long as your motherboard bios allows It :)

Handy for benching and fault finding me thinks!

Hey,

Given that your average 4gb flash drive in the supermarket is £12+, i think these are a bargain. The 4gb one I picked up from blue stripe land a few weeks ago only writes at a pathetic 3MB/s, and for 16gb worth would have cost me £48.

I note that these USB 3.0 drives are backward compatible with USB 2 ports... that's good :).

However "OS Support: Windows 7 / Windows Vista / Windows XP / Windows 2000" :(. Any particular reason Mac OS X isn't supported?

All my current USB drives work fine on both Win7 & Mac OS X :). Shame that Mac OS X doesn't have NTFS support as standard though .

Mac doesn't have USB 3 so it wouldn't support the high speeds quoted which is the only reason why I can see the manufacturer has left osx out.

Andy

Incorrect - there's a USB 3.0 card with Mac drivers

Mac doesn't have USB 3 so it wouldn't support the high speeds quoted which is the only reason why I can see the manufacturer has left osx out.

You're correct in saying that no Macs currently ship with USB 3.0 on the motherboard (and rumour is their not gonna bother with USB 3.0 - waiting for Light Peak instead :() and Mac OS X does not have drivers for USB 3.0 PCIe cards as standard. However LaCie's USB 3.0 PCI Express Card (1x) does have drivers for Mac OS X available and works fine in a Mac Pro running Mac OS X and using LaCie's drivers:).

I would have expected the MX-FX USB 3.0 flash drives to be exactly the same on Macs and Windows PCs - i.e. work fine on USB 2.0 ports (but obviously not as fast as on USB 3.0 ports) but to unleash the full speed you a USB 3.0 port (be it on your motherboard or a PCIe card) and the driver for you motherboard/card (whether it's included in your chosen OS or on a CD from the board/card manufacturer).
The way the product listing is worded however sounds to me that "It'll work fast on a Vista/7/XP/2K PC with a USB 3.0 port. It'll work, but slower, on a Vista/7/XP/2K PC with a USB 2.0 port. It won't work at all on a Mac, whether it's got a USB 2.0 port or a USB 3.0 port or a fairy-dust port doesn't matter, it won't work at all on a Mac."
