recently i noticed my machine doesnt always shut down......its about 50/50 to wether it does or not.i think it may have happened after a windows update
but cant be sure......i know if i were to re-install the os before i update it or put in any programs its fine but when it wants to update there are about 30 updates from windows and i think something in there is conflicting with something else. the os is windows 7 ultimate does any body else have this issue or know what update is causeing this?

Could be something hanging on shutdown, you can decrease the wait to kill time:

Press Windows Key + R or take the RUN option from the start menu.

Type regedit and press Enter to open up the Registry Editor Window.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

In the right pane, right click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and click on Modify

Type in a number between 1000 to 20000 [1-20 seconds] 12000 is default.

Go for something like 1000-3000.

Nps, glad it has helped!

I tend to make this change even when stuff is running fine. I don't have anything that needs to shutdown gracefully so prefer to get the system off asap.

it wouldnt shut down again last night.....i cut the power after waiting for 2 minutes
very very strange i think im going to do a fresh install at the weekend and install stuff one by one checking with a shut down after each.....time consuming but its the only way to find a needle in a hay stack
