First, specs;

Q9550 @ 3.4 (27 degrees idle, 59 prime95 stress test)
GTX280 1GB
8GB Corsair XMS2 800mhz
Asus P5Q-Pro
Zalman 750w PSU

Windows 7 RC 64 bit

Sometimes in certain applications, my machine loses power. It literally just shuts off, no warning, just does it. At the moment this is happening in STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and Darkest of Days Demo. Sometimes it powers off immediately upon launching the game, sometimes I get a while to play, it seems random.

My machine can run pretty much anything else with no problem, I tested HL2, TF2, DOD Source, CS Source, COD 4 and 5, Max Payne 1 and 2, Crysis and Warhead, Company of Heroes, The Last Remnant, Wolfenstein, Call of Juarez, Empire Total War among many others and don't have this problem.

I can only assume something in my box is failing due to the coding in those two games, does anyone know where I could start with troubleshooting?

And yes, I wiped drivers and reinstalled them, reinstalled the games, antivirus check, spyware check, malware check, and tried resetting my overclock (Although I still had this problem on Vista 32 with this rig and no overclock).

Long shot but have a quick look inside to make sure all the cables are connected properly and none have came loose.

I re-did all my cable management the other day and double checked it when this problem started happening again. It's all put together properly.

Also might be worth mentioning, my friend gets similar crashes in both these two games, but he gets crash to desktop instead.

The price you pay for using a Nvidia I have found is driver bugs (plus the other problems)... It could be this problem in your case if most high end games like Crysis are running OK but a select few aren't. Have you tried a wander through the Nvidia forums that's where I found the right older Forceware version to sort out a problem I had. Is your friend's GPU an ATI card or a Nvidia card?

Patched the games fully? Raise a support incident with gsc-games / Phantom EFX perhaps? Try changing the graphics settings to lower settings to see if the game still crashes in the same places?

Have you set your rig to automatically restart rather than blue screen? I would recommend setting it to blue screen in this case - might give you a clue what is wrong.

Temperatures OK for your GPU?
