Machine turning on, but no display

Got a bit of a troublesome PC at the moment.
It's my cousins machine and he's told me that sometimes when using it, he'll suddenly lose the display, machine will stay on, but he'll get no signal going to the monitor, he's said that he's also tried connecting it up to his brothers monitor to rule that out.
After that, everytime he turns machine on, he'll get the usual no signal, until eventually it starts to work again.

I've got the PC round my house now, I had it running furmark for over 4 hours and I've not seen a fault, the max temp was 82°C but it ran fine.

I'm thinking it could be linked to the PSU, about a year ago I had to replace it and I put in a REALLY cheap unit, gave them the option of a better 1 and they said no.

Any suggestions on what could be the fault, or even how to get the fault to appear?

Firstly, can you list the specs? Silly question, but is it a separate GPU or onboard/onchip?

What is he doing when he loses video? gaming? browsing?

Does sound like it might be overheating, but then you'd see that in Furmark.

I wonder if your friend has iffy wall power going through a cheap PSU - can you try putting a UPS on the system to smooth out the power?

Also how long is "eventually" when you say it eventually starts working again? I have heard of some motherboards not initialising the PCIe port 9if it is a PCIe GPU) until the rest of the machine is almost into windows.

hth,

Jon.
