I have a down jacket that needs a wash, more than a hand wash.

I wore this on holiday and obviously overheated and sweated in it.

I've read that many people do wash these but I'm wary about ruining it.

Any of you outdoorsy lot got any advice?

Thanks all. I'm not sure our dryer has low heat. It's quite annoying. It has settings for different types of clothes. In hindsight I'd just have got one with temp settings or something

There'll be a hand wash setting on your washing machine surely?
Apparently it's the drying that's the issue..
Indont reallt understand how hand wash even works. It's still going to get soaked. It would still need to be tumble dried.

If I was going to do it myself I'd use wool settings

Ah ha, yeah. Got ya.

Yeah it's the most annoying part about washing any down jacket, you end up chasing clumps around like a nutter no matter what you do.
Its the first time it has to be washed. I've gotten away with airing it. But this last trip it def needs a wash.

Coming up to winter now too. So I'd like to be able to use it

I've got some ridiculously expensive Hungarian Goose Down pillows and they are machine washable up to 40c.

I think I'd do them on a delicates wash though, I'd imagine the jacket can survive that, if not the OP can just hand wash it in the bath.

fill the bath half way, add some washing machine detergent let it soak a bit, agitate it some, let it soak some more.

do the same thing with clean water a few times.

Seems like drying them fast enough is probably the issue

Yeah I think 8ts the drying.
And hand wash or machine it seems like you'd still need to tumble dry.

That seems to be the main thing you must have a tumble dryer

Decided to take the plunge today and all good.
Bit scary coming out of the washing machine. Super flat and clumpy.

5x25 minute session in the dryer and manually pulling apart clumps and it's fully puffed up again.

wow :O

I have a hungarian goose down duvet, I havem't put on the bed yet, I think ima google for duvet protectors and never have to wash it lol...

I have a down sleeping bag.. And I'm going to purchase a liner for it I think. The thought of washing that is horrifying!

Always use 3x tennis balls when I'm drying mine; helps with fluffing out and getting rid of clumps.

On my dryer the 'low setting' is the 'synthetics dry' option, with 'cotton dry' being the 'high setting' for temperature; most will be the same (unless they have separate temp controls).
I hate these "programmes".

I went through the instructions trying to find which setting was best to use.
For the blurb on synthetic it said "medium/low" heat. For everything else it wasn't clear.

If I was getting a tumble dryer again I'd just look for one with buttons for high/medium/low temp. None of this program BS where you have to guess what it is.

There was no delicate setting. But probably about 15 options! Ridiculous

Felt quite hot after 25 mins so I just didn't leave it in long.
