MacMini + Apple Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter

Does anyone know how reliable these are?

I have a MacMini at home which I need to work on tomorrow.

There isn't a single PC in the house (all laptops) although there is an old VGA Monitor and a TV which allows VGA input.

I'm thinking of going tomorrow to buy one from the store in Kingston-Upon-Thames (if they're in stock!!) but the reviews on the Apple site are a mixed bag.

Does anyone have any experience with these, are they utter rubbish or will it simply "work"?

I've tried attaching a DVI to VGA converter plug from the HDMI->DVI adapter that was supplied but this doesn't do anything.
