Someone gave me a set of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/MACRO-EXTENSION-TUBES-CANON-Camera-black/dp/B001CWZE6A

But I have know idea how to use them can anyone link me to some sort of help with these? Or better still simple explain their use?

Playing around I note if the 18-55mm is fitted with these then I can see very little. Swapping to the 55-250 I am getting superb close ups. But really need some info on these things.

Yeah they increase your magnification but at the cost of range. With tubes fitted, you'll find that you can't focus on far away stuff. The amount of range you get will depend on the lens used and the tubes used. You don't get much DOF either when you start to get close ;)

I have a 25mm Canon extension tube which allows AF to still work. It's quite useful and even quite nicely with my 200-400mm lens which is handy for butterflies and dragonflies etc.

I have been looking at one of those and seem reasonably priced so may get myself one.

Thanks.

The 25mm tube or the 200-400? ;) hehe

The Canon 25mm tube isn't particularly cheap but there's plenty of other manufacturers making AF tubes.

Not Canon no as they do tend to be over priced. But as you say there are plenty of aftermarket choices to be had.
