Such a great utility. I have it on both my iMac and my MacBook. It just sits there and a couple of times a day, it scans your applications for any updates.

It sounds simple and it is but the first time I ran it, there were so many updates available to applications that it just wasn't funny. It's nice to keep all the apps up to date and although the Mac App Store takes cares of anything you buy through it, it's not the same with other stuff. I find it frustrating sometimes to open an app that I want to use and find it pops up with an update and I have to wait for it to install.

With this, it sits unobtrusively in the menu bar and just gives a number showing how many updates are available. Most of them can be updated directly from within MacUpdater itself or if it needs an installer, it downloads it and triggers it for you. Some apps can't be directly updated through it but the list of programs it supports is growing all the time.

I love it. It cost me a tenner but it's well worth it. The demo version will allow you to update ten apps for free but after that you need to pay so there's no harm in giving it a try.

Note, I paid for this, I didn't get it for free and I've not been asked to post this. I just thought it's a really useful utility and wanted to share it.

Using 3rd party applications to update your system, no thanks would rather do it manually.

You say that but you (Or people in general) install 3rd party software on your devices. This particular piece of software is no less questionable than any of the others.

Speaking as a pentester the risk of leaving applications outdated is far greater.

No longer supported as of today. Haven’t decided what to move to next but will figure something out eventually.

Well that sucks.

The website is vary patronising.

Q: I did not know MacUpdater would stop working - I just bought it a few years ago!
A:
If you purchased MacUpdater 3, then you already knew about the discontinuation on 2026-01-01 because:
1.) There was a red notice on the website.
2.) There was a large red notice about the lifetime during the purchase process.
3.) It was impossible to purchase MacUpdater 3 without directly acknowledging the discontinuation date.
The only thing that has changed in the past years is our decision not to offer another paid upgrade to MacUpdater 4.
Every purchase made in 2024 or 2025 was heavily discounted to accommodate the reduced remaining lifetime.

I updated to version 3 in April 2023, there was no mention of it then.
1) I've never been to their website, why would I need to?
2) Not when I bought it in 2023 there wasn't.
3) See 2.

Q: Why will there be no MacUpdater 4? Why was MacUpdater discontinued?
A:
Because we refused to offer MacUpdater under a subscription license, the product was never financially sustainable.
Also, MacUpdater required too much maintenance to work as perfectly as it did. We've performed elaborate maintenance on every single day since mid-2018, which is not healthy or sustainable for a small team.

When an app is good, people will pay for it. MacUpdater is one of the few apps I would happily have paid a subscription for.

Some kind of big red in app notification would have been nice. I see it's mentioned now in the release notes.
