Mafia 2 ending (just finished it)

Just been enjoying mafia 2 and the last few levels were interesting and then i finished the last mission and..

What the hell. They were gona kill Joe, i expected a ending where joe and vito lasted the distance together and got to be head men in their own mafia family. Was anyone else disappointed in this, was 2k nuts to make that ending.. Seems like a crapper of a move to pull it feels like ive just wasted all my time playing. Sigh, disappointed. Could have had a nice win ending but they didnt and left a cliff hanger
 
I think it was prepping for a proper expansion. I would have liked that but yeah it is slightly a wtf moment! Unless the ending affects vito in Mafia 3? It is bound to be referenced.

2k trashed the game. They had a great chance to make an open world title and instead focused hard on DLC to milk it.
Joe was a big mouth - a loose canon and too risky to be kept alive and the old man knew it. Iirc they don't actually show him being killed but it is implied anyway. I think there was some DLC with Joe but I cannot recall if it was set after the events of Mafia 2 or prior to it.
 
While the ending was abrupt and not what its writer Dan Vavra intended (game was cut and changed after he left), I still somewhat liked it. It was pretty clear Joe was going to die, Vito was in the mob..and that was it. Ambiguous, nasty, unresolved..kinda like real life.
