2K Games and Illusion Softworks have formerly announced Mafia 2 for next-generation consoles and Games for Windows.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

Original on the PC is one of the best games ever IMO, this has a lot to live up to so I hope they don't make a mess of it and change things too much.

Totally agree. They have a lot of hype to live up to, and the game's only just been announced.
 
Definately one of the best games ever, such an amazing storyline, better than most gangster movies based around the same period.
 
If the development and the emotional attachment to the characters is half as good as the first game i'll be in heaven. I loved the first one, from the way it played to the narration of the story it self! simply awesome! :D

Will be mid 2008 at a guess, but expect more solid details in the next few days from Leipzig.
 
Wow those screen shots are amazing. It will all come down to the story and great settings for many of the levels.
