Reading the Mafia 2 thread and it seams to be one big hate fest, so I've had a idea to make this a poll (if a mod could create one would be great)to see who actually played the first game as i think their opinion on the second means the most.
So here are the choices:

1) I played and completed Mafia 1 and like/love Mafia 2.
2) I played and completed Mafia 1 but don't like Mafia 2.
3) I played Mafia 1 for a bit but i like/love Mafia 2.
4) I played Mafia 1 for a bit but i don't like Mafia 2.
5) Not played Mafia 1 but i like/love Mafia 2.
6) Not played Mafia 1 but hate this Mafia 2 crap.
7) WTF this aint GTA? I want an xbox for Christmas.

Personally I would go for option 1.

Although i was disappointed at the end at just how short it was and the ending was rubbish and left wide open for them to ass rape us with the rest of the story in DLC.
 
Nor I played a bit of Mafia 1 did not like it now getting a Mafia 2 code with new card that I don't want wish I could chose some other game code :D
 
Completed it, its epic!

All depends on what floats your boat. I couldnt get into red dead redemption that everyone raves on about, but i loved this!
 
Just beat the game tonight. I voted option 1.

Apart from the captacular ending, and the nagging sense that a lot of content was removed before shipping, it's actually a very decent game. It doesn't come close to the original for me unfortunately, but i think that was almost an impossible task. If you really enjoyed a game then your appreciation of it only grows over time, and once that happens you're never going to be able to play a sequel without judging it entirely against it's predecessor.

It was the same thing with Deus Ex 2, it wasn't a patch on the first game - but had it come out with a different name i think most people would have enjoyed it well enough. I certainly did when i replayed it a year or so later after it came out.

Overall i would give Mafia 2 an '8' or 'B'. The story and pacing were not as good as the first, and the missions in the first 1/3 of the game are mostly forgettable, but there is still an awful lot to like about it. The general atmosphere they managed to create, and the attention to detail in the city/music/cars/fashion etc... are all incredible.

The game took me 14 hours which is fine for a single player game i think. I just replayed Mafia 1 a few weeks ago and that took me 15 hours including doing every single one of Lucas Bertony's car stealing quests and all that stuff.

EDIT: One thing that i did feel was missing was the lack of any suspenseful missions, like 'A Trip to the Country' from the first game (my favourite mission).
