I downloaded and installed Mafia2 with Steam, started playing and it seems to perform pretty poorly compared to the demo so I figured I would play with the settings and get it right, this is what I have done so far with restarts happening between uninstalls and testing:

  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • disabled CF
  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • Changed Mafia2 settings
  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • downloaded latest CF profiles
  • enabled CF
  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • uninstalled physx
  • reinstalled when mafia2 reopened
  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • tried tf2 - 80fps average in empty spawn (was 300fps)
  • uninstalled physx
  • tried tf2 - 80fps average in empty spawn
  • uninstalled Mafia2
  • tried tf2 - 80fps average in empty spawn
  • tempertures checked and everything fine
  • dxdiag checked, no tests or reports available (win7 64bit)
  • Mafia2 reinstalled
  • 20fps average mafia2 benchmark
  • 3dmark11 run for comparison

I had played L4D2 and TF2 the day I installed Mafia2 and everything was running perfectly before the new game was installed. I had the Mafia2 demo before and that ran perfectly fine also, when I uninstalled the demo/physx a few weeks earlier there was no issue with any game or the system. Using 10.12a drivers during all of this and the only difference to the system is a TWIMTBP game was installed.

Where do I go from here barring a format and re-install?

Sounds like it might be another 6970 driver issue. You have restarted and reinstalled gfx drivers, tried older drivers etc?

How? the drivers worked fine since their release on every other game and the Mafia2 demo ran completely fine on them before I bought the game/installed the full game.

Why would the CPU dependent physics tests of 3dmark be so badly crippled by GPU drivers? Not to mention the rest of the test is much worse now.

Something in Mafia2 has caused a massive conflict within the system or else something in my system is dying but atleast the temperatures do not reflect a hardware issue.

Ok problem solved, I must put my hand in the air and admit the PEBKAC.
I had the ASUS EPU settings on power saving instead of Automatic as usual, the CPU was completely chocked.

Sorry :(

CPU test froze on my computer and screwed stuff up with my 6970. I could play the demo of mafia 2 with an 8800GTX but the second the 6970 goes in, i can't.
