I'm looking at expanding the games I play/own and am looking for something that is solo play and also co-op. The person I game with has no experience and get sd overwhelmed to easily when playing a vs game.

I already own Zombicide but am now looking at Gears of War or Mage Knight, do any of you have any experience with either?
I think I'm leaning toward Gears but Mage Knight does get some fantastic reviews...

Can't comment on Gears, but Mage Knight is widely regarded as one of the best games out there and sits in my top 2-3.

I will though that it is a massive step up in complexity compared to Zombiecide as it also widely regarded as one of the most difficult to learn. I didn't find it as bad as expected after a couple of rounds and to be fair other the pvp combat, no rules are that bad. It's just the amount of them and the large number of individual situations that have their own rules.

If you are willing to sit down, go through the walk through and put time in required to learn it (and many hours that will be), then it's definitely worth it, probably the best solo game out there. If your time is limited or you'd rather ease into it then go for Gears.

Other solo/co-op recommendations I have is Space Hulk: Death Angel, which is much better than it looks and fairly cheap. Also Eldritch Horror pays decently solo and is an excellent mid level difficulty. Lastly the Dungeons and Dragons series of adventure games such as Wrath of Ashardalon get decent reviews on here, though I wasn't as impressed.

I would second the 'Space Hulk' card game.

As for 'Gears of War' or 'Mage Knight' both are on my wishlist but I don't have any experience with either. I suspect Gears of War would be better for smaller windows of play time.
From what I hear 'Mage Knight' is a rather long, but enjoyable, game.

Space Hulk: Death Angel (the card game) has been around £13 on Book Depository recently.

Their price changes are utterly random it seems, but worth keeping an eye on. Absolute steal at that price.

At £20 from my local game store I thought it was well worth the money. If I paid £13 I'd feel guilty!

If the person you game with has no experience then Mage Knight is literally the last game you should ever consider. I don't know anyone who has managed to learn to play it without the aid of a lengthy video tutorial. It's massively fiddly with mechanics, the rulebooks (plural) are awful and games go on for hours.

Gears of war is good, it doesn't have a steep learning curve but is frustratingly hard at times.

Character movement and actions are - like the AI controlled Locust - done by drawing cards.

Everything from the game is there like cover, the weapons and is heavily reliant on playing as a team and making sacrifices for each other and the win of course :)

Games can take a few hours depending on the dice and card draws, did I mention it's really hard?

Thought I'd share my opinion since, you can't really only have just one boardgame can you!?
