magman's 25,000 tiffy competition

I am now within shooting distance of attaining another one of my major goals for SETI I - my 25,000 WU tiffy.

To celebrate this occasion and to give those of us without races something to keep our SETI interest a bit higher, I though it would be nice to have a little competition to see if you can guess the date and time that I actually reach the 25,000 WU mark.

A competition is useless without a prize. Given that I recently won a nice couple of crunchers from that nice Mr Jaydeee007, a suitable prize would be to turn those crunchers over to the winner for a tiffy's worth of WU's. In other words, the winner of my little competition would have exclusive use of this brace of crunchers for the production of 100 WU's, about 9-10 days worth of production from these machines.

I also think it's worth setting a few rules, as follows:
  1. As with Jaydee's comp, I will set up another thread were guesses can be entered.
  2. The Guesses thread will be opened from noon tomorrow.
  3. All guesses have to be entered by Midnight on 5th February 2003.
  4. All guesses must be entered in the Guesses thread to be valid.
  5. Guesses should be to the nearest minute.
  6. Only members of the OcUK SETI team need apply.
  7. Only one guess per forum member.
  8. There can be no duplicate guesses, the first poster with a particular guess, owns that guess exclusively.
  9. No other comments in the Guesses thread please, if you need to ask a question, pop into this thread instead.
  10. My decision as to the winner is final, though I will be fair in this, no favouritism - I promise. :D
  11. The winner will be guesses the nearest time (either before or after) to the 25,000th WU being submitted to Berkeley.
  12. In the event of the 25,000th WU being submitted precisely between two guesses, the winner will be the forum member who posted their guess first.
  13. The prize is transferable, so you can donate it to another OcUK SETI Team member if you so wish.
  14. The prize is to be claimed within 1 month of the winner being announced.
  15. The winner can't use the prize against me in any races (this is me getting a bit paranoid now!). :rolleyes:

    Once the guesses time limit has expired, I will put my queue on auto-transmit (I'm stashing at the moment to make it a bit more interesting). I will also post a summary of all of the guesses from time to time over the next 5 days in this thread so you can see who has guessed what.

I will say it will have to be to the nearest minute, as I am expecting to dump more than 1 WU per hour. I will edit the rules to reflect this (I've just though of another rule anyway).

I am expecting some last minute guesses bracketing a particular time from some forum members anyway. :D :D

I've got the guesses in a spreadsheet, so calculating the runner up shouldn't be a problem.

My queue is now dumping its stash and is on permanent transmit till the 25,000 WU is dumped at least.

Now we just have to sit and wait (though I have got a good idea who the likely winners are). :D :D
 
It's an amazing feeling, sitting here wearing my patent smug-git grin :D , knowing that there are only two or three people in with a chance of winning this little competition and not being tempted by the barely veiled attempts to get me to spill the beans.

You'll just have to wait and see. :D :D
 
Not grasping at straws are we M8. :)

My true production rate will become obvious in the near future, though I must admit that I am hoping to increase my production again in the next few weeks (I can't let carbon8ed get too complacent) :D :D

I vote for a suspension of Augmented's spanky priviledges as he appears to have put a curse on Borkeley, the link is down again.

With a fair wind and a working Brokeley, we should see this comp coming to an end very soon :D
 
Getting very close to the end now.

As at 20:15 my total is 24993.

Looks like it is down to a choice of two now, Widget and walsherz, and if I don't manage to crunch another 7 WU's by 20:41, walsherz has won it.

This all depends on Berkeley of course (and whether Augmented has his cable shears out again).

Time to wait and see. :D
 
My 25,000th WU was sent in at 21:38, according to my queue.

I missed the actual event but I set the time on my queue server to match a Rugby Radio clock source so I didn't have to watch over it like a hawk.


The winner is walsherz.


The runner up is Widget.


It was a lot closer than I though it would be in the end. All I need now is for the winners to let me know their SETI email accounts and I will let them know when the cunchers start working for them.

Finally, a big :D for the compliment some poeple made regarding my production and a big :p for those who underestimated my output.

Time to start saving for some new crunchers to go carbon8ed hunting. :D
 
Sorry I haven't replied any earlier, but I've been on a training course for the last couple of days in Brum.

I've just switched the first cruncher over to walsherz's account and the other will follow once its finished its current WU.

There won't be any problems over a queue as well (thanks for the offers folks) as I've got nearly 700 WU's waiting im my queue at the moment anyway.

H'onwards and H'upwards for the good ship happy stomper. :D

Actually it was 102, as I've been visiting the smoke today, so didn't have time to switch over the last cruncher.

Time to go carbon8ed hunting methinks. :D (which may be a little difficult, as our outputs are likely to be very similar for the near future)).
