I have the exact same MBP and had the same issue a few months ago. I took the adapter to Apple and said I thought it was failing and could they test it, they plugged it in to a machine, it did what it was doing (not connecting properly) and they gave me another one free of charge.
My adapter was in perfect condition so I guess as long as your isn't looking completely knackered you have decent chance of getting a free one.

Was going to say, Apple are pretty good at replacing, if the condition of the charger is okay. I had to replace my 10 month old 85W one the other day as it just decided to stop working.

But as you've said the cable sheath is broke, with wires exposed, I can't see them doing that for you.

I own a Macbook Pro 13 (Late 2011) and we had our power adapter fail on us. I have replaced it with the below which works perfectly and extremely cheap.

Power and batteries are something that i'm quite picky about, given apple will swap them out for free the same way they do with lightening cables then personally i'd go back every single time and get a free replacement.

That's fair enough, I wasn't aware that you could do this and didn't want to go about paying Apples price for a charger, when I use the MacBook probably 2/3 times a month for short periods of time.

I do have lots of Lightning cables, that could do with replacing, so I may well pop in and do that if its as easy as you say.

It's a well known issue that magsafe and lightening leads suffer issues at the connector, i've seen apple staff swap them out on the spot, you have a 2 year warranty on them under EU law anyway but as it's a known defect you've got 7 years in the UK. The wife normally takes ours in if they fail, given she's a walking advert for apple they don't tend to give her any agro. PSU replacements take slightly longer than lightening cables and I'd possibly not rock up with a load of them at once. Side note I switched to Anker braided cables, 6ft long for under £8 - zero failures so far, fully MFI certified.

mine had split here. i had tape around it, bbut it only prevented it for a while.
then i tried to strip it back and fix it but it was too close to the hard rubber of the adapter. still looking for one on ebay etc
