You just need to charge your iPhone on it, and it'll update (as long as your phone has internet access), so there is no need to remove it from your car.

Plugged it in to my Mac mini and the firmware updated on it in about 30 seconds. Easiest way to tell is leave your phone on it and you'll hear it switch off and back on again.
