I moved into my flat back in june this year, and was getting mail quite regularly for the previous occupants. I left this in the mailbox (downstairs) and it was collected usually every few days.

However, its now getting silly and im getting insurance renewals, new credit cards, bank statements, letters from the dvla etc and its quite tiresome.

Is there anything wrong with me writing 'not known at this address, return to sender' on the letters and chucking them in the nearest postbox?

discuss.....

Nope. It's somewhat easy to set up mail forwarding, so if the previous occupants couldn't be bothered, and couldn't be bothered to notify the relevant companies either, then that's their lookout.

Note - even with mail forwarding the odd letter will slip through but that's a lot different to what you're describing.

recently ive started to get mail order stuff and credit cards... so im a little concerned they are still actively using this address tbh

yep, when we moved we setup mail forwarding with royal mail - as far as we know, it catches pretty much everything

as for the new house, all the mail we get we just return to sender - goes down after a while

thats what im hoping.

If I do this for 2-3 weeks they will hopefully get contacted somehow and told to update the details.

is it legal for them to have all this sort of stuff still coming to this address?

Most of it including credit card applications, will just be mail shots. So yes it's legal.

It's an offence to open it and I'm pretty sure it's an offence to bin it. But you wont get caught.

Just get a few sheets of labels for the printer. Print loads out. Stick on and post. No need for any stamps or anything. just cross out address and stick label by the side.

Is it atcual credit cards? or just the ones from companies like BA and capital one. with a fake card and an application form.

they had a new american express card come last week

we get more post for the previous occupants of our rented house than we do ourselves. if they can't be bothered to get their own mail re-directed then i'm afraid i'm not doing it for them. ours goes in the bin.

edit: that said, i am a complete hypocrite. i was *so* grateful to the new occupants of my mums old house when they hung onto something for me... but then i was actually decent enough to get in touch with them and apologise for not sorting it out.

whats also strange is that some of it looks like its even been re-directed to our address, so not only is the proper recipient not getting it, rm are still being paid extra to direct it to address where they no longer reside. i know putting it in the bin won't stop it, but then we might not be in this property for long.

I've had my flat for over 4 years now, and we STILL get mail for previous occupiers. At first I sent everything back "not known at this address", but now I just bin it, because we get too much. I still get at least 5 items a week for other people, so it's possibly not the greatest idea just to bin it. I tried asking Royal Mail to stop delivering anything that didn't have our surnames on it, but they seemed to give up after a couple of months, so it's probably not even worth trying.

If they have a redirect to your address, you should speak to RM and see if they can remove it.

I don't think there's much point in moaning about it if you put it in the bin. It only takes two seconds to write "no longer lives at this address" and throwing it in a postbox on the way to work or whatever.

And the amount of stuff for them since sending everything back has dropped to almost nothing.

If it's getting bad then i'd just return it to the sender or tell the RM. I personally don't mind the odd letter but if it's covering your doormat then you have a problem.

When I was in a student house, one of the previous occupants had ran up a big Egg credit card bill and ran off, so we occasionally got letters from them too. Every 2-3 weeks we would bin the lot. The old occupants only came around once or twice in the entire time to collect the mail, by which point it would have been ridiculous.

What about the time it takes to post them off? I never go anywhere near a post box, so I have to go out of my way to post off other peoples mail if I want to get rid of it. In my case, I sent stuff back for the first year and it never changed the amount I recieved because some places just don't seem to care, especially if they are owed money.

yeah we get loads of stuff, my house mates kindly dump it on the table or leave it on the floor and I being the only person left from last year proceed to sort, open or bin the mail.

Some thing like...
Junk Mail & Random Stuff => Bin
Previous tenants i know => Phone them
Important stuff (C&RS/DVLA/ETC) => Stays on table for a while then gets put in the bin
