Mail....not working properly?

Mail program in Leopard doesn't make the "new mail" sound any longer, though it does seem to work when mail is sent. I've tried the properties and all is correct with the settings and i've tried changing to a new sound with no luck. Any idea's please? Many thanks Av8 ;)
