Not sure if many people have experience with OSX Server but it's worth a try...

Is it possible to set up the OSX mail server such that it downloads mail from my btinternet ISP mail account via POP and then makes it available as IMAP to the clients?

It seems that the docs for everything I've read seem to require me to have a registered domain for incoming mail and what seems like a simple thing cant be done.

I don't really want to go to the bother of a registered domain.

I'd just like to be able to access my complete email archive from any Mac/Windows machine at home. Happy to look at Linux/Win solutions too.

Thanks

Good question !

I don't think BT officially support IMAP is the only reason although I have seen posts on forums where people have configured it that way.

I believe BT uses yahoo like virgin media use google etc. If so you should be able to fetch your btinternet email using:

imap.mail.yahoo.com

They do use yahoo I am pretty sure - At least that's how it appears when I use the web mail access when I am at work or away from home.

Maybe I should pursue just setting up IMAP - It won't cost anything at least !

Cheers

I do not know whether this is relevant, but I am helping someone who is fed up with hotmail not fulfilling there needs on the imap side. I opened up a gmail account for them that does imap and then went into hotmail and forwarded everything to the gmail account.

I then set up the gmail account in mail, and it works a treat. I use Thunderbird myself because I monitor 8 addresses and I also run it in Windows.
