Mail shots were originally printed advertising leaflets that were distributed by mail. The term might be used for eAdvertising as well now though

A mail shot is the term used to describe a large amount of mail sent for a specific exercise....like, a month end Mail Shot, where all our held customer accounts are sent updated statments for the month.

That's how I understand the term "Mail Shot" in business.
