Main oven stopped heating

Hi all.

Bought a house a few months ago and a few days ago the main oven stopped working. The light and fan come on but no heat. The upper oven/grill works fine, but cooks very unevenly so I would like to fix the main oven.

Looking online it is likely to be the element, but I have been told that it could be the thermostat.

Anything I can try out before buying parts I don't need?

I haven't got anything to test really. I have a 240V engineer's screwdriver though but I am not sure I want to put >10amps though it (current element is 2500W rated).

The old element looks fine and has no breakages or sparkly bits on, but it is several mm thick it isn't a weedy bit of wire.
